What is it?

The R Study Group is a collaborative community that meets periodically, synchronously, and remotely, offering an inclusive and dynamic environment for teaching and learning the R programming language, especially tailored to the field of Public Health. The group’s distinguishing feature is its flexibility: each participant can join or leave according to their availability, without the pressure to attend every session.

In addition to the meetings, we have a WhatsApp group with nearly 700 members that serves as a community for help, discussion, and collaboration around the R language. The group was created to fill a gap in practical R training for health professionals, combining technical expertise with real-world applications relevant to collective health.

She currently serves as an Advisor at the Secretariat of Specialized Health Care of the Ministry of Health (SAES/MS). Laís has worked as a Technical Consultant for the Emergencies, Evidence & Health Intelligence team at PAHO/WHO and for the Department of Epidemiological Analysis & Surveillance of Noncommunicable Diseases (DAENT/SVSA/MS). She also served as Health Care Manager in Dias D’Ávila (BA) and as Institutional Supporter of Primary Care in Camaçari (BA). Laís holds specializations in SUS Preceptorship (IEP – Sírio-Libanês Hospital, 2017) and Family Health (FESF-SUS/FIOCRUZ-BA residency, 2017). Her interests include care-data analysis for service planning, applied statistics in public health, health surveillance in emergencies (outbreaks, disasters, climate events, service interruptions), and field-based preparedness and response activities.

What is the main objective?

The primary goal of the R Study Group is to help health professionals and students master the R language, focusing on its practical applications in Public Health, Epidemiology, and Health Surveillance.

This initiative goes beyond mere instruction by creating a space for the exchange of experiences, where knowledge flows collaboratively, allowing participants to build a solid foundation in R while connecting with other professionals in the field. The group is strongly inclusive, aiming to democratize access to statistical and computational tools for solving everyday health challenges.

Who is part of this group?

The R Study Group is free and open to anyone who wishes to learn or improve their data-analysis skills using R. Although everyone is welcome, there is a special appeal to professionals in Public Health, Epidemiology, and Health Surveillance, who are strongly encouraged to join. We currently have 684 members in our WhatsApp community. The diversity of backgrounds, students, researchers, and seasoned professionals, is one of the group’s greatest strengths: everyone shares knowledge, learns from one another, and applies their skills to real-world contexts.

What are the main activities?

The group holds weekly sessions, organized into learning cycles. Each cycle covers a specific set of topics so that participants can progress at their own pace and according to their interests. To date, we’ve offered two comprehensive study cycles:

  • Basic R Introduction Cycle: Covers the fundamentals of R, including data import, preprocessing, and visualization, essential skills for newcomers.
  • Intermediate Biostatistics with R Cycle: Designed for those already familiar with R, covering advanced topics such as hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and linear regression analysis, all applied directly to Public Health scenarios.

The group has already run four editions, and each session is carefully designed to allow participants to learn in a practical, interactive way.

The 2025 cycle will focus on the “R Manual for Epidemiologists,” covering everything from the basic through the intermediate levels in a continuous sequence.

What materials are used?

The reference material adopted by the group is the “R Manual for Epidemiologists,” an internationally respected guide translated and adapted to the needs of Brazilian professionals by Applied Epi, a nonprofit organization and grassroots movement made up of field epidemiologists from around the world who volunteer their time to provide resources for the public‐health community. ProEpi supported the manual’s production, with several associates contributing: Danielly served as a reviewer of the original material, and Laís was part of the translation team for the Brazilian Portuguese edition.

How to participate?

The R Study Group live sessions will take place weekly on Thursdays and will be recorded. However, it is important to emphasize that the group’s primary goal has always been, and will continue to be, the exchange among professionals. Therefore, we strongly encourage participants to attend the synchronous meetings, even though recordings will be available afterward. For security, the synchronous meeting link is shared in the WhatsApp group.

Video Content

After each session, the recordings will be made immediately available on the ProEpi Members Portal for exclusive access by members.

For the general public, recordings will be posted to ProEpi’s YouTube channel, grouped into a playlist, 90 days after the session, and can be accessed here.

All participants may join ProEpi to access this and other exclusive content. Watching the recordings does not count toward attendance for the live sessions.

R Study Group Community

The WhatsApp group will remain active, and access must be requested through one of ProEpi’s social media channels or directly from the project leaders. This helps ensure that only real individuals join, preventing bots or scammers from entering.

Additionally, we will create a LinkedIn group and page to share session announcements and supporting materials.

Annual Certificate

To obtain the participation certificate, it is necessary that the participant register for each synchronous meeting on the Zoom platform; attend at least 70% of the synchronous meetings held in the year with the support of ProEpi; and complete at least 3 of the 5 challenges that will be launched during the year on the content.

The challenges will be simulated Public Health problems with public data that must be answered in multiple‐choice forms based on the content of the meetings.

Attendance control will be carried out by ProEpi, and the workload will be calculated according to the duration of the meetings, with a standard value for all, considering the total annual workload.

ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP

The partnership was established in early 2025, after several successful cycles of the R Study Group. The increase in the number of participants (almost 700 members in the WhatsApp group) generated new demands, especially around outreach and social media management, activities the group leaders could not handle on their own. Laís and Danielly, who had already been ProEpi members for several years, saw the partnership as a natural evolution to meet these needs.

How and When the Partnership Was Established

The partnership was formalized in early 2025, with ProEpi taking on responsibility for aspects such as organization, social media outreach, and session recordings. The leaders of the R Study Group remain responsible for content creation and the materials used during the sessions.

Motivations That Led to the Collaboration

The partnership was driven by the opportunity to align the group’s values with ProEpi’s vibrant community. Another motivation was the need for greater outreach and professional coordination, something ProEpi could offer, thanks to its strong community of epidemiologists and public-health professionals.

Objectives and Benefits of the Partnership

The partnership will allow sessions to be recorded and enable participants to receive a participation certificate with documented hours, so they can demonstrate they have been part of an R-language learning environment, an age-old request of the group’s members.
