The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) is a network of the World Health Organization (WHO) of more than 270 institutions and technical networks around the world that respond to public health events by sending professionals and resources to the affected countries. Governed by a Steering Committee and coordinated by an Operational Support Team, which is based at WHO in Geneva, Switzerland and in various WHO Regional Offices that support the response at the regional level. GOARN aims to provide rapid and effective support for alerts and responses to infectious disease outbreaks and public health emergencies when requested.
GOARN’s partnerships include medical and surveillance initiatives, regional technical networks, laboratory networks, government departments (Brazil’s Ministry of Health), United Nations organizations (for example, UNICEF, UNHCR), the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (ICRC, IFRC), international non-governmental humanitarian organizations such as the Brazilian Association of Field Epidemiology Professionals (ProEpi). All have the capacity to quickly pool their resources to help affected countries seeking support.

In 2016, the then-current management, knowing the importance of the work carried out by GOARN, began to carry out the response trainings offered by them, held at the time in Mexico and in Geneva. In those moments, ProEpi’s representatives consolidated the partnership that lasts to the present day.
In recent years, ProEpi has sent around more than 23 professionals to support various countries, among which stand out Angola, Bangladesh, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, among others.
ProEpi’s Board holds periodic thematic meetings to build strategies to strengthen the partnerships that ProEpi currently has. On August 15, one of the items on the agenda was the presentation on GOARN, considering that ProEpi has been a partner of GOARN since 2016.
The objective of these discussions by our Board is to define strategies for how ProEpi can prepare and train its associates and form a network on standby to respond quickly to requests for support.
To our associates, stay tuned that soon we will have more news on the subject for you!
